Happy New Year BladeTapers…..

Over the Holidays, we lost one of my Hockey Heroes, Leafs Great Johnny Bower. The funny thing is, I never saw him play, I’m too young, but he was still a Hero of mine.

Perhaps some of this Hero idea came from how genuine and giving Mr Bower was of his time. I had the good fortune of meeting him many, many times over the years at Hockey events, signings, fundraisers, and even ran into him once at his local Tim Horton’s (he LOVED his donuts!).

This picture though sums Johnny Bower up for me. February 2010, Military Night at the ACC. Johnny Bower is in full gear to drop the puck and pay tribute to the Canadian Military, to whom he lied about his age to to sign up for WWII as a teenager. Being hustled away by handlers afterwards behind the Leafs bench, he had plenty of time to stop and talk to an 11 year Will Nesbitt. Autographs, pictures, some quick questions about Will’s hockey exploits thus far. To a kid, spending time with a Hockey Legend is something else, and Will certainly appreciated that.

RIP Mr Bower. You loved Toronto, and Toronto loved you right back. You will be missed……
